Part-Time Lecturers Deserve University Support!
The Issue
Part-Time Lecturers teach 30% of all Rutgers classes, yet receive only 3% of Rutgers' instructional budget, with no health benefits whatsoever. These instructors have been working without the protection of a new contract for nearly a year, and while they have submitted repeated proposals to Rutgers University management, they have not been met with an equitable response in negotiations.
The best student learning conditions happen where faculty members are respected and have access to the tools to succeed. The best research and collaborations can occur with a faculty that is united in the assurance of equitable and professional conditions.
To best serve the interconnected Rutgers community and the students at the core of the educational mission, President McCormick and the Rutgers administration should support a swift and fair resolution to the Part-Time Lecturers' contract negotiation process.
Did you know…
…PTLs are guaranteed (and often receive) NO PAYMENT for the
independent study courses they teach?
…PTLs teach 30% of Rutgers classes, but their combined salaries are
only 3% of the instructional budget?
…many former Rutgers graduate students teach as PTLs? Without a fair
contract, we offer a bleak future to new graduates.
…even after years (or decades!) of teaching at Rutgers, PTLs never
know if they will be returning the next semester?
…Rutgers PTLs have been working without a contract for nearly a year
while negotiations have been repeatedly delayed?
…as negotiations drag on, the Professional Development Fund has
remained inoperative?
…our PTLs are the only Rutgers bargaining unit left without the
protection of a fairly negotiated contract?
…PTLs prepare our students to succeed but have no health insurance and
may lack basic professional needs, like offices and supplies?
…many PTLs must teach at multiple colleges, just to make a modest living?
What can we do?
1. Sign the petition! Tell President McCormick to support education and ALL educators with a fair contract for PTLs.
2. Raise awareness and spread the word. Repost the petition, asking your friends "Did you know..." + a fact about PTLs. Now that THEY know, ask them to do something about it. http://chn.ge/PTLru
3. Show that learning and working conditions at the University matter to you! Follow the Rutgers One coalition for updates and events for supporters: http://www.facebook.com/rutgersone
