Betty Cook was appalled to learn that a middle-schooler in the same school district as her own child was denied lunch because she had no more money on her meal card. School employees took the student's lunch tray, pulled her out of the lunch line in front of all her peers, and gave her nothing but bread and milk to eat.
Parents and other Change.org members were outraged, and in fewer than three days, Betty's petition received 163 signatures. The petition helped scare the Rockingham County School Board into immediately changing its lunch policy so that no child ever goes hungry during lunch.
"I think it was the 100th person from California who signed that really made an impact," Betty said. "They [the school board] saw that this wasn’t just a local issue."
A middle school child was denied her lunch because she had no money in her account to pay for lunch and had her tray taking away and giving bread and water in front of her class mates. This is a Rockingham County School policy and it needs to be changed, no child should have to go hungry or be embarrassed.
Stop the school from not offering lunch to a child with no money.
Greetings,
I just signed the following petition addressed to: Rockingham County VA Public Schools.
