In 1996 a piece of legislation was passed by the Congress and signed into law by then-President Bill Clinton; DOMA (The Defense of Marriage Act) of 1996.
This law allows states to disregard the marriages (or civil unions) performed in another state.
Congress and President Obama should press forward with the repeal of this law and allow gay citizens who wish to wed to fight for their right to do so in their home state.
Repeal DOMA 1996 Now!
Dear Honorable
We the signers of this petition call upon our representatives in our government to use the power of his or her office to repeal the disastrous DOMA 1996 law.
This law not only creates an additional obstacle for equality, not only denies individuals the right to petition a court for redress of their concern (the freedom to marry), but it is also a very clear violation of the "full faith and credit" clause of our beloved Constitution.
We implore you, by signing this petition, to give redress to our concern and act swiftly to repeal DOMA 1996. If marriage is truly a States Rights issue - then allow the states to decide; do not allow this law to remain and hinder the American fight for equality!
With Humble Regards,
[Your name]
