The standard manual of psychological conditions used by psychiatrists, psychologists and all professionals is known as the DSM. The fourth edition was published in 1994 and the fifth edition is scheduled to be published in 2013. The proposed fifth edition contains a diagnosis for what is known as an "autism spectrum disorder". The problem with this designation is that it automatically socially disadvantages an individual on this spectrum, even though they may be not only fully functional, healthy, happy and sociable but oftentimes may even be more adept than most so-called "normal" humans at any or all mental, physical, emotional and social functioning.
With the advent of an MRI scan test which can positively detect neurological differences which give rise to individuals on this neurodiverse spectrum, this poses a serious potential problem if individuals who were previously completely functional in every sense are suddenly medically diagnosed as having a "disorder". There is even a worry of a potential threat of genocide since individuals on this spectrum are indeed genetically different in specific ways. Were the official professional manual to classify these perfectly functional, valid humans as invalid "disordered" entities, some of us worry that a second holocaust may be on the horizon. The DSM classification for "autism spectrum disorders" needs to be changed
Dear Mr. Kupfer,
I represent and support the millions of perfectly valid, healthy and functional neurodiverse individuals and their families who will be classified as inherently "disordered" if your version of the DSM-V is published as is. We demand not to be thrown into the psychological trash bin in this fashion. We deserve the right to exist, the same as any genetically valid life form, without a professional stigma that could ultimately result in a second holocaust. As a result, we require that the classification known as "autism spectrum disorders" be changed to remove the "disorder" terminology and to describe us as we truly are, not as a few who have specific difficulties have been seen. Please see the free online book youmaybeinsane.com if you require more information. This book was written as a complete replacement for the DSM in its entirety since the currently used classification system which is based upon empirical data is incomplete, inaccurate, lacking a coherent description of the fluidity that is human existence and completely fails to describe the majority of daily problems most individuals encounter.
At a bare minimum, we require that the millions of healthy, functional autistics, aspergians and other neurodiverse individuals NOT be permanently tarnished with a dangerous brush that could lead to their ultimate genetic destruction. We demand a category in your manual that represents our true potential!
