Sugar Gliders are sold at many trade shows and malls in Fairfax. The people selling these creatures do not give accurate care instructions to the purchasers and they do not advise the buyers that these animals are illegal in their jurisdictions. Because of this lack of information these animals are purchased by people who believe they are an easy pet. After several months of inadequate care the animals become ill. When people seek help from a veterinarian the animals are confiscated or euthanized. These animals become very strongly bonded to their owners. When they are taken and not euthanized they become scared and depressed. It will usually take months of hard work from a rescue to help these animals overcome their loss. Many people do not take them to the vet because they fear the animal will be taken away from them. This is a horrible abuse of any animal. Sugar Gliders not a danger to any ecosystem in Fairfax. They are extremely sensitive to temperatures. They will die if they get too cold. Their body temperature does not allow them to carry rabies. If they are bitten by a rabid animal, they are so delicate they will most likely die from an attack. There are many people residing here in Fairfax who would love to rescue these animals and to help educate future owners in their proper care. Please remove these wonderful loving animals from the "Exotic" animals list.
