How We Won

Feb 29, 2012

For a decade, citizen activists have been standing up to Edison International and calling for the Fisk and Crawford coal plants to close. Today, the campaign reached a historic victory – the Fisk coal plant in Pilsen will shut down in 2012 and the Crawford coal plant in Little Village will shut down by 2014. Greenpeace is proud to have worked alongside the Clean Power Coalition and change.org to hold Edison International accountable for operating some of the oldest and dirtiest coal plants in the country.

This campaign was rooted in the hard work and persistence of community activists throughout Chicago. Thanks to support on change.org, the residents of Chicago can finally breathe freely.

For years, Midwest Generation, a subsidiary of Edison International, has operated old, dirty coal-fired power plants in the city of Chicago. The Fisk and Crawford plants are responsible for an unacceptable amount of hardship on the local community.

In fact, pollution from the Fisk and Crawford  plants prematurely kills 42 people every year. That human cost is paid entirely by the communities who live in the shadows of these two aging plants. You won’t find it on Edison International’s bottom-line.

But the community is fighting back. And the Change.org community has an important and urgent role to play in supporting them.

Edison International is a national company and is part of a broader industry that affects all of us. They need to hear the message not just from community activists, but from the American public.

Shut down Chicago's Fisk and Crawford plants by 2013

Dear CEO,

For years, your subsidiary, Midwest Generation, has operated old, dirty coal-fired power plants in the city of Chicago. The Fisk and Crawford plants are responsible for an unacceptable amount of hardship on the local community.

I’m writing to let you know that I support the thousands of Chicago residents who are standing up to you and fighting for clean air and healthy communities. Your short-term profit is not worth human lives.

Shut down the Fisk and Crawford plants by 2013. The whole country is watching.
