Primates Should Not Be Pets!
The recent incident in which a woman was severely mauled by a pet chimpanzee and the chimp was shot and killed is just one example of how dangerous primates can be. We can’t undo the damage, but we can take action to prevent these situations and protect primates who belong in the wild - not in the pet trade.
There are an estimated 15,000 monkeys and other primates in private hands in the United States. Many primates kept as pets end up abused or neglected. Often acquired as infants, as they grow they can become too strong and aggressive to handle.
Legislation being considered today in the U.S. Congress - the Captive Primate Safety Act (H.R. 80) - will prohibit interstate commerce in primates as pets. Your U.S. Representative will consider the Captive Primate Safety Act this afternoon and your help is urgently needed!
TAKE ACTION
Please make a brief, polite phone call to your Representative to urge support for the Captive Primate Safety Act.
To find your Represenative's name and phone number, simply click here then enter your zip code. His/her contact information will appear.
When you call, you will likely speak to a staff member who will pass your message along to your legislator. Remember to be polite and professional, and leave your name and address so it is clear that you are a constituent. You can say:
"Hello, my name is [your name] and I live in [your town]. As a constituent, I'm calling to urge my Representative to support H.R. 80, the Captive Primate Safety Act. This legislation must pass immediately, before another person is injured or killed by a pet primate, and before another primate falls victim to the pet trade. Thank you."
