Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act (H.R. 503/S. 727)

Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act (H.R. 503/S. 727)

The Issue

Although horses aren't being slaughtered for human consumption in the U.S., tens of thousands of them are being transported each year to slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico. Horses are subjected to intense suffering and abuse during the transport, then are inhumanely slaughtered to provide meat for other countries.

The Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act, introduced in 2009, would make it illegal to slaughter horses, or to transport horses across the border for slaughter, saving thousands of horses from cruelty and death.
