How We Won

Feb 03, 2011

The United Kingdom's East Devon district is one of the most scenic places on earth, and with Change.org's help, it will stay that way. Almost 350 Change.org members petitioned the East Devon District Council, asking members to vote against a proposed, 4,000-pig factory farm. If this farm was built, it would potentially pollute water supplies, create noise and odors, and mar the picturesque region. Our emails, along with calls from local activist groups like the Venn Ottery Action Group, made a big impact: On February 3, 2011, Nick Stephen, the Communications Officer for the East Devon District Council, emailed Change.org to say that "the Council has now decided to refuse this application."

Why This Is Important

Venn Ottery in East Devon in the United Kingdom is a beautiful pastoral area with a rich history. But a quarry and massive factory farm threatens to ruin this unique place.

The proposal for a 3,640 hog farm would bring about 3 huge buildings and a manure lagoon. The farm would not only ruin the natural beauty of the area but would also cause air increased traffic, air pollution, noise pollution, and a strong stench.

Write to the East Devon District Council and tell them they shouldn't allow such an atrocity to happen.

Please Don't Allow A Factory Farm to Ruin Your Community

Greetings,

I recently learned that there is a proposal for a massive factory farm in your jurisdiction. I am writing to urge you to reject this proposal, and urge your fellow council members to do the same. Venn Ottery is already reeling from the possible quarry that will be built in their community. Adding a massive farm would be adding insult to injury.

Factory farms can be detrimental to an areas appearance, but they pose other risks as well. They increase traffic, noise pollution, air pollution, and often smell, stinking up large areas. They are also a burden on water sources and the storage and discarding of manure can lead to spills and contamination. This farm will add all these burdens to the community without adding jobs, and while detracting from tourism. The farmer may reap the rewards of this farm, but your community will not.

Please do not allow a factory farm to build in Venn Ottery. It would be a shame to lose such a beautiful and historic place.
