The community of Alta Sierra currently offers short term vacation rentals as an alternative to other accommodations in the broader geographic area.  There is currently pressure being put on the Kern County Board of Supervisor and Zoning / Planning teams to eliminate and/or restrict vacation rentals.  Not only is this an infringement on personal property rights, it will take away a key resource for families and other groups to enjoy the area.  There are no longer campsites available in the mountain area, and there are no hotels immediately in this area of the Greenhorn Mountains.  This online petition is to enable you to help send a message to Kern County officials to preserve access to vacation rentals in Alta Sierra.

Preserve Property Rights and Vacation Rentals in Alta Sierra !!

Greetings to Kern County Board of Supervisors and Planning/Zoning Commission

We, the undersigned, understand that Kern County government leaders are considering clarification of zoning regulations across the county for R1-zoned properties as there is an effort to restrict and/or otherwise ban some vacation rentals, specifically in the mountain community of Alta Sierra. As concerned citizens, we would like to preserve the ability to take advantage of vacation rentals in Kern County. Alta Sierra provides comfortable access to the Greenhorn mountain area. With the closure of the Greenhorn Mountain campgrounds during the past years, the Alta Sierra vacation rentals provide the only access to enjoy this mountain area / community near Bakersfield. Not having access to these vacation rentals altogether eliminates the ability to enjoy this mountain area. Please do not limit property rights or discriminate against the vacation rental options available in Alta Sierra.

Further, the vacation rentals in Alta Sierra provide an alternative to other types of housing further away from the mountain area in the towns of Kernville and Lake Isabella. Some key benefits of the vacation rentals style of vacationing in Alta Sierra are:
- overall more affordable for families
- vacation rentals provide comfortable, homey arrangements
- temperature is much cooler than the Kern River Valley during the summer
- ability to stay in the snow near Alta Sierra Ski Resort during the winter
- ability to take advantage of vacation rental kitchens and cook our own meals if desired.

We also believe that the vacation rentals fit in well in this community of overwhelmingly weekend and part-time occupancy usage. Please don't penalize both vacation rental users and owner by limiting vacation rentals in Alta Sierra. Again, please ensure that vacation rentals are allowed across Kern County in R1-zoned properties, and particularly in Alta Sierra.

Best Regards,

Concerned Citizens for Property Rights
