Poverty Hurts - Join the Fight Against Poverty

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that in 2010 - 46.2 Million people in the U.S. were living in poverty. This is an increase from 43.6 million in 2009 and it is the 4th consecutive annual increase.

The World Bank reports that in 2005 – 1.374 Billion people were living in poverty globally. It defines poverty as living on less than U.S. $1.25 a day.

People like you and I are surviving without sufficient food, shelter, medical care or education. If each and every one of us does one little thing to help fight poverty, it will snowball into a whole movement that will make a big impact on the poverty statistics. Get involved.

Here's what you can do:

1. Volunteer at your local library, church, community center or community college teaching English as a second language. Lots of immigrants need to learn English to get a job.

2. Volunteer as an after school tutor at your local high school to tutor kids who are not doing well in school and are in danger of dropping out.

3. Volunteer at a homeless shelter or halfway house helping people write resumes, practice for job interviews and look for jobs.

4. Make a donation to a food bank or soup kitchen and volunteer your time.

5. Join a local club such as the Rotary Club or Lions Club that does a lot of community service projects to support the local community.

Whatever you do, it will make a difference.
