Remove Bishop Robert McManus from Diocese of Worcester
Remove Bishop Robert McManus from Diocese of Worcester
The Issue
On May 4, 2013, His Excellency, the Most Reverend Robert J. McManus, Bishop of Worcester, was arrested for drunk driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and refusing a breathalyzer test while on vacation in Rhode Island. (He has since plead "not guilty.")
Despite having a no-alcohol policy (with altar wine exempt) in the Diocese of Worcester, the Bishop's DUI charges are only a fraction of major problems that are plaguing the diocese.
First of all, Bishop McManus has refused to offer the Traditional Latin Mass and Sacraments personally or have a priest assigned to do so within the city limits of Worcester because of a "fictious" city ordinance that supposed prohibits such activity.
Secondly, Bishop McManus has closed several parishes and sold diocesan property to anti-Catholic organizations.
Thirdly, Bishop McManus has restricted the Sacrament of Matrimony to only people who can pay $5000 stipend, and not to good Catholics who cannot afford such "fees." The Bishop also requires that a couple must wait one year in advance for a wedding, which encourages the couple to fornicate before marriage.
Lastly, Bishop McManus has allowed public penitents to be burried in Catholic cemeteries, and has allowed Catholic funeral rites to such, a violation of Canon Law.
While the Bishop has demonstrated some good things while in Worcester, the recent most recent incident above (where he could face loss of license and/or jail time) shows that the Bishop is unfit for ministry to the souls of the Diocese of Worcester.
As a Traditionalist Catholic, I have to exclusively attend the Traditional Latin Mass in another diocese because of accessibilty issues. ALL Catholics deserve to receive ALL sacraments according to the valid ancient rites of the Church, as stated in Summorum Pontificum.
An incident like this is the reason why for nearly 2,000 years, only the priest-celebrant of the Mass drank from the chalice at communion time, because drinking outside of the Holy Sacrifice is considered a sin. However, with the Vatican II revolution, Communion is often given under both kinds. Wouldn't the Diocese want to be liable for a parishioner driving drunk on the way home after drinking from the chalice?
In all fairness, I believe Bishop McManus should be removed from ministry as head of the Diocese of Worcester. I encourage anyone who agrees with me, Catholic or not, resident of Worcester County or not, to sign this petition.
