An Appeal from Syrian Christian Intellectuals to His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI

"In the name of the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit Amen"

Your Holiness Pope Benedict XVI

We are a group of [Syrian] Christian intellectuals loyal to our Lord Jesus Christ and the teachings of our church. And we know well, away from any personal benefit, the nature of the Syrian people and the truth of their revolution.

Syria has contributed to humanity during all of its prosperous periods and spread love and good. On its land the Lord Jesus walked and the Apostle Paul launched his message. Its patrimony speaks for the depth of Syria’s spirituality and contribution to humanity.

We believe that our mission as Christians in this world is to send a message of light and peace as the Lord said in the Gospel of Matthew: “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven”.

In the fifties of the last century, Syria was on its way to becoming a credible democracy, until a group of mercenaries, Arab nationalist fanatics came to power to ravish that democracy and violate Syria with all its cultural and human wealth, turning it into a kingdom of fear and silence. Our Churches and their leaders were no exception to these transformations and unfortunately their silence has converted them to partners in the crime of tyranny and arbitrariness.

Those who stood up and resisted this regime were either killed, tortured, intimidated or displaced.

For 16 months this regime has been preying on and violating the dignity of the Syrian people and their sanctities without any mercy or pity. The crimes committed by the regime are unprecedented and unmatched.

Here is where Syria stands now: we either sacrifice the Syrian people so Assad remains … or we sacrifice Assad so the Syrian people remain. The Syrian people now are being crucified at the hands of its regime. Furthermore, the regime is fueling sedition between the components of society and attempting to use ‘the protection of’ Christians as a cover to justify its false existence.

What is happening to our youth on the ground is actually the embodiment of the limitless love of our God, as “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends”.

Holy Father,

We need a clear stance from your Holiness, a stance that our Churches have failed to express. Either ask Assad and his regime to leave … Or the West should be prepared to receive 20 million Syrian refugees and let Assad, his soldiers and mercenaries (Shabbiha) stay in Syria.

The departure of Assad and his regime is not only good for Syria, but for all of humanity, because this regime and its Iranian ally are leaders of terrorism all over the world. They are complicit in the spread of terrorism all over the world.

We expect your Holiness to save us not as Christians but as Syrians and we all have full confidence in your divine wisdom.

That is why we turn to you on behalf of all those we represent in this country, where our Lord Jesus walked, to take decisions that raise the light high and bright as a guide, a light for the people of the East, Christians and Muslims.

May the peace of our Lord Jesus be with you and us and save Syria from its evils so it can resume its human role in the world.

نحن مجموعة من المثقفين المسيحيين المؤمنين بتعاليم سيدنا يسوع المسيح وتعاليم كنيستنا.. ونعي جيداً، وبعيداً عن أية منفعة ذاتية، طبيعة الشعب السوري وحقيقة ثورته.
لقد شاركت سوريا في العطاء للإنسانية في عهود نهوضها وكانت تنشر حباً وخيراً.. على أرضها مشى الرب يسوع ومنها انطلق بولس الرسول وآثارها تشهد على عبق دورها الروحي والإنساني...
نحن نؤمن بأن رسالتنا كمسيحيين في وسط العالم هي رسالة نور وسلام كما قال الرب في انجيل متى : أنتم ملح الأرض أنتم نور العالم.لا يمكن أن تخفى مدينة موضوعة على جبل. ولا يوقدون سراجا ويضعونه تحت المكيال بل على المنارة فيضيء لجميع الذين في البيت. فليضئ نوركم هكذا قدام الناس لكي يروا أعمالكم الحسنة ويمجدوا أباكم الذي في السموات

في الخمسينيات من القرن الماضي كانت سورية تسير على درب ديمقراطية معقولة، حينما أتى مجموعة من المرتزقة المتعصبون من القوميون العرب ليفترسوا تلك الديمقراطية، ويستبيحوا سوريا بكل مخزونها الثقافي والإنساني ويحولونها إلى مملكة من الخوف والصمت.. لم ينجُ من هذه التحولات حتى كنائسنا ورؤساءها والذين تحولوا بصمتهم للأسف إلى شركاء في جريمة الاستبداد والتعسف.
أما من قاوم هذا النظام فكان مصيره الموت أو التعذيب أو التغييب أو الترهيب أو التهجير.
ومنذ سنة ونصف والنظام يفترس ويستبيح كرامات وأجساد ومقدسات السوريين بلا أدنى رحمة أو شفقة. لقد قام النظام بجرائم غير مسبوقة في التاريخ..
نحن الآن بوضع: إما أن نضحي بالشعب السوري لكي يبقى الأسد...أو نضحي بالأسد ويبقى الشعب السوري.
إن الشعب السوري اليوم يُصلب على يد نظامه... وفوق كل ذلك يؤجج النظام الفتنة بين مكونات الشعب ويحاول جعل المسيحيين دريئة للدفاع عن وجوده الباطل
وما يحدث على الأرض بشبابنا المضحي هو فعلا تجسيد لمحبة إلهنا الفائقة الحدود انه " ليس لأحد حب أعظم من هذا أن يضع أحد نفسه لأجل أحبائه."

نريد منكم موقفاً واضحاً عجزت كنائسنا أن تعبرعنه. فإما أن تطلبوا من الأسد ونظامه أن يرحل... وإما على الغرب أن يستعد لاستقبال 20 مليون لاجئ سوري.. وسنسامح الأسد وجنوده وشبيحته بسوريا.

إن رحيل الأسد ونظامه ليس خيراً لسوريا فحسب بل لكل الإنسانية، لأن هذا النظام وشقيقه الإيراني هما رأس الإرهاب في العالم كله. وهما الشريكان في توسع وانتشار الإرهاب في العالم.

ننتظر منكم إنقاذنا ليس كمسيحيين فقط بل كسوريين ولنا كل الثقة بحكمتكم الإلهية .

لهذا نتوجه إليكم بما نمثل في هذه البلاد التي مشى عليها الرب يسوع لأن تخرجوا بقرارات تبقي السِراج عالياً ومضيئاً وهادياً على العتبة..سراجاً للمشرقيين مسيحيين ومسلمين.

ليكن سلام الرب يسوع معكم ومعنا وينقذ سوريا من أشرارها. لتعود لدورها الإنساني في العالم

Nel nome del Padre del figlio dello Spirito Santo AmenA Sua Santità Eccellenza Papa Benedetto XVISiamo un gruppo di intellettuali cristiani fedeli al nostro Signore Gesù Cristo e agli insegnamenti della nostra chiesa . E conosciamo bene, lontani da qualsiasi beneficio personale, la natura del popolo siriano e la verità sula sua rivoluzione.La Siria ha sempre contribuito all’umanità durante i periodi di rivoluzione e diffondeva amore e bene., sulle terre dove ha il Signore Gesù e l'apostolo Paolo e le sue tracce, dimostrano la spiritualità e umanità.Noi crediamo che la nostra missione di cristiani in mezzo al mondo è di dover lanciare il messaggio di luce e di pace come ha detto il Signore nel Vangelo di Matteo: Voi siete il sale della terra, Voi siete la luce del mondo non può essere nascosta una città collocata sopra un monte.. Né si accende una lucerna per metterla sotto il moggio, ma sopra il lucerniere perché faccia luce a tutti quelli che sono nella casa. Lasciate che la vostra luce illumini agli uomini, perché vedano le vostre opere buone e rendano gloria al vostro Padre che è nei cieliNegli anni cinquanta del secolo scorso, la Siria era sulla strada per la democrazia ragionevole, finchè non è arrivato un gruppo di mercenari, di fanatici nazionalisti arabi che volevano togliere la democrazia, e rovinare la Siria con tutto il suo patrimonio culturale, umanitario trasformandolo nel regno della paura e del silenzio .. Non è sfuggito questo cambiamento anche alle nostre chiese e dei principi dello stesso, e che hanno convertito il loro segno, purtroppo, in partner del reato di tirannia e di abuso.Coloro che hanno resistito a questo sistema erano destinati alla morte o alla tortura o all'intimidazione o alla fuga .Da un anno e mezzo il governo aggredisce la popolazione violando la dignità dei corpi e del patrimonio dei siriani, senza alcuna pietà o compassione. I crimini del regime non hanno precedenti nella storia ..Questa è ora la nostra situazione: o sacrificare il popolo siriano perché Assad rimanga ... o sacrificare Assad e resti il popolo siriano.Il popolo siriano oggi viene crocifisso dalle mani del suo regime . Oltre tutto questo il regime cerca di rendere colpevoli i cristiani dei suoi crimini:Quello che sta accadendo sul terreno con i nostri giovani è in realtà l'incarnazione dell'amore del nostro Dio, “non c’è amore più grande di mettere tutti se stessi per chi si ama”.Sua Santità il PapaVogliamo da parte vostra una posizione chiara, perché le nostre chiese non sanno più interpretarla. O chiediamo ad Assad e il suo regime di lasciare ... O l'Occidente dovrebbe prepararsi a ricevere 20 milioni di rifugiati siriani .. E lasceremo Assad e i suoi soldati e mercenari in Siria.La partenza di Assad e il suo regime non è bene solo per la Siria, ma per tutta l'umanità, perché questo sistema e il suo fratello Iran sono il capo del terrorismo in tutto il mondo. Sono complici nella diffusione del terrorismo nel mondo.Ci aspettiamo che ci salviate non solo come cristiani, ma come siriani e tutti noi abbiamo fiducia nella Vostra saggezza divina.Per questo ci rivolgiamo a Voi in base a ciò che rappresentiamo in questo paese in cui ha camminato il Dio Gesù, affinchè prendiate decisioni che lascino la luce alta e luminosa , luce per chi vive ad oriente, cristiani e musulmani.Che ci sia la pace con voi e il Signore Gesù con noi e che protegga la Siria dai suoi nemici perchè torni al suo ruolo umanitario nel mondoNota: Non possiamo raccogliere le firme con nomi espliciti, perché ciò significherebbe la morte certa per i firmatari.
