Why This Is Important
Our nation is taking the first steps to respond to the unprecedented threat posed to our natural heritage by climate change. The scientists and wildlife managers at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have prepared a plan to protect our nation's wildlife and wild places from climate change.

It is a strong recognition by the Obama administration that we must act now to address climate change and that the effects on endangered plants, fish, birds and wildlife will be drastic if left unchecked. Without immediate action, polar bears, pikas, salmon and other endangered species could be lost.

Please send a letter to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to support their efforts to protect wildlife and wild places from climate change.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Climate Change Strategic Plan is a coordinated strategy to both reduce global warming pollution and safeguard fish and wildlife from the inevitable impacts of climate change. It will guide the agency in responding to the impacts of climate change on the nation's natural resources such as changing wildlife migration patterns, the spread of invasive species, changing precipitation patterns and rising sea levels.

Endangered species are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, because they are reduced to small populations in limited habitat and already on the brink of extinction. The US Fish and Wildlife Service plans to scientifically evaluate what species are most vulnerable to climate change and take action to protect these species and their habitat. We need to encourage the Fish and Wildlife Service to prioritize endangered species and address the impact of climate change on species when making decisions on listing, critical habitat, consultation, recovery plans, 5-year reviews and delisting.

Ask the US Fish and Wildlife Service to ensure that endangered species are safeguarded from the impacts of climate change.

We will collect your comments and submit them as official public comments for the US Fish and Wildlife Service's Climate Change Strategic Plan. The deadline for public comments is November 23, 2009.

Thank you for helping to protect endangered species from the urgent threat of climate change.
