The IWC (International Whaling Commission) issued a moratorium prohibiting whaling in the Indian and Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuaries. (See links - http://www.iwcoffice.org/conservation/catches.htm and http://www.iwcoffice.org/conservation/sanctuaries.htm). You are probably familiar with the telivision show "Whale Wars" which documents the efforts of the environmental group Sea Shepard Conservation Society.

Since 1986 Japan, Iceland and Norway have brutally slaughtered over 25,000 whales under the guise of scientific research and for commercial purposes, setting whaling quotas in excess of 1,000 whales per year.

This is a petition to the United States Congress and President Obama, demanding the use of diplomatic pressure , and if needed, naval enforcement of the 1986 Whale Moratroium to end the illegal whaling operations conducted by Japan, Iceland and Norway.

Stop Illegal Whaling Operations in the Indian and Southern Oceans

Greetings, Elected Official

We are writing to request all means (diplomatic and other) be utilized to end the illegal whaling actions of Japan, Iceland and Norway.

Since 1986, over 25,000 whales have been illegally slaughtered in the Indian and Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuaries. These sanctuaries were created by the 1986 whaling moratorium issued by the International Whaling Commission (IWC), which prohibited the killing of whales for commercial use. Japan, Iceland and Norway claim they are conducting scientific research and therefore are not bound by this moratorium. Whaling quotas in excess of 1,000 whales per year is not research.

These illegal actions must be stopped immediately. We thank you for you swift action on this cause.
