BOT members whose service began prior to 2012 should resign
BOT members whose service began prior to 2012 should resign
The Issue
Over a period of many years the Penn State Board of Trustees failed grievously their oversight and other fiduciary responsibilities to protect the University and its mission. Their failure of leadership enabled a cover-up, by the highest-ranking University officials, of child rape on University grounds by past University employee Jerry Sandusky. It enabled Sandusky to use University facilities and programs, which he was provided special access to in order to encourage his retirement from the University, to rape additional children over the course of more than ten years.
The Board of Trustees long-term failure to oversee the University functioning, hold the University President responsible for his actions, and insist upon integrity, responsible decision making and decision making processes, has irreparably damaged the lives of more than ten children, destroyed the University's reputation, compromised its educational mission, opened it to numerous and damaging law-suits, threatened its state funding, damaged its fundraising ability, led to downgrades in its credit rating, caused significant financial damage to the State College community, and brought deep shame upon the members of the University's extended community of alumni, donors, current students, staff, faculty, and other employees and volunteers.
For all these reasons and more, all members of the Board of Trustees whose term of service began prior to 2012 should resign their positions and a new and independent board be elected to replace them.
