Americans have long enjoyed the right to privacy.  Now it seems that those rights are being infringed upon from many directions.  Now our health records may be at risk.  In converting health records to digital, patients must be vigilant that their privacy be protected.  Current patient privacy laws do not extend to these new upgrades.  Any new bills that promote health IT development should include the right for a patient to: review their files, correct bad/incorrect data, block access to personal info without consent, know who is requesting to view patient health data.

Patients must know who is viewing their health records.  Many patients might neglect to divulge personal or embarrassing symptoms with their doctors for fear of whom may be viewing this information.

In an age where our privacy is shrinking, we must insist our Representatives in government protect out rights to privacy as patients.

Patient Privacy

Dear Representative,

Americans have long enjoyed the right to privacy.  Now it seems that those rights are being infringed upon from many directions.  Now our health records may be at risk.  In converting health records to digital, patients must be vigilant that their privacy be protected.

Recently, Microsoft has announced plans to launch a new IT database named HealthVault.  This site will store medical records from a variety of sources such as health-care providers and insurance companies. Google will soon launch a similar product.  The HIPPA my not cover these online records, which protects access to patient information records.  The privacy policies of these new online products are subject to change at any time.  So policy could change to allowed consumers to be targeted by advertising based on their medical records.

In an age where our privacy is shrinking, we must insist our Representatives in government protect out rights to privacy as patients.
