How We Won

Dec 21, 2010

It took more than a year-and-a-half of pushing, but on December 21, 2010, Congress passed the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (S. 510). The move came after more than 1,800 Change.org members signed our petition asking Congress to pass the food safety reform bill. You can read more about this victory here.

Our country's food safety system is in critical need of reform. Growing numbers of food recalls and dangerous outbreaks are putting us at risk. It is estimated that there are over 76 million new cases of foodborne illness in this country every year at a staggering cost of $152 billion.

The House of Representatives passed a bill in July 2009 that will make much needed progress, and now the Senate needs to act by passing S. 510, the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act. This bill was reported out of committee in November 2009 unanimously and has broad bipartisan support.

Let your Senators know they can't delay in bringing this to a full vote any longer.

Pass S. 510 FDA Food Safety Modernization Act

Dear Senator,

I am writing to ask you to support S. 510, the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act, and take whatever action you can to bring this bill to the floor for a full vote. While this bill falls short of the complete overhaul our country's food safety system needs, it is certainly an improvement.

Additionally, these reforms should not erect barriers for the small- and mid-size producers who are already using safe and sustainable practices. I am asking you to support amendments that will fix this bill so as not to be overly burdensome to small, local producers.

The House has already acted, and now it's your turn. We can not afford to delay these much needed reforms any longer. I look forward to seeing the swift passage of S. 510. Thank you in advance for your support.
