Why This Is Important

This action alert is designed to tell the Obama Administration and Congress that health care reform is incomplete without including long term services and supports through passage of the Community Choice Act. The Community Choice Act would reform Medicaid to increase access to community-based services and supports for all Americans. It would provide individuals with disabilities in institutions and nursing homes the option to receive community-based services and help address waiting lists by providing guaranteed access to a community-basd benefit within Medicaid. It would also fix the institutional bias in Medicaid, liberating people from institutions and supporting them to live empowered lives within the community.

Health Care Reform is Incomplete Without the Community Choice Act!

Dear Representative

I am writing to urge you to support passage of the Community Choice Act (H.R.1670/S.683), sponsored by Senator Tom Harkin and Rep. Danny Davis, as part of any health reform package and to contact the leadership and members of the Senate Finance and Health Education Labor and Pensions Committee to express your support for CCA's inclusion. The disability community has been forced to wait far too long for passage of this crucial civil rights legislation. Failing to include CCA in health care reform will result in continued segregation into institutions and nursing homes for countless Americans with disabilities who could better be supported in the community. The Community Choice Act would reform Medicaid to increase access to community-based services and supports for all Americans. It would provide individuals with disabilities in institutions and nursing homes the option to receive community-based services and help address waiting lists by providing guaranteed access to a community-based benefit within Medicaid. It would also fix the institutional bias in Medicaid, liberating people from institutions and supporting them to live empowered lives within the community. Please become a co-sponsor of CCA and support the inclusion of the Community Choice Act in Health Care Reform today. The civil rights of Americans with disabilities cannot afford to wait any longer.
