Lifetime Alimony is awarded as a standard divorce procedure when parties are married for 10 years or more (and sometimes less). The award is costly to attempt modification in the event of job loss, diminished income (such as a change of employment or retirement). If you fail in this attempt, you are now paying legal fees along with alimony which is likely already in arrears. If you do not have the money to pay alimony as demanded by the court, you are in contempt and incarcerated. Even if an ex-spouse becomes sufficiently independent, lifetime alimony continues. . This is not child support and this is not an effort to eliminate alimony, NJalimonyreform.org is a grassroots organization composed of a group of dedicated people who want fair and equitable divisions, and not a lifetime sentence imposed because of marrying the wrong person. Visit NJalimonyreform.org or our facebook account, New Jersey Alimony Reform to view the objectives of reform and to read the multitude of horror stories from people forced into this involuntary servitude known as lifetime alimony. I am sure you will agree that lifetime alimony needs reform in NJ. Thank you
