As of Monday, December 5, 2011 a DISCUSSION of a ban on all “Dobermans, Rottweilers, Chow Chows, German Shepherds, Great Danes, Pit bulls, Mastiffs (all bully breeds), Akitas and Huskies” will fall under a new breed ban.

“These dogs will be held for the mandatory 72 hrs and then will be killed, they will not be given a chance to be adopted.”

“If the dog is an owner turn-in, he will be killed the second he walks into the back.”

To Whom It Concerns,

I'm writing to you today to express how angered I am to hear of the breed ban proposal that would enact a 72-hour kill plan in Cumberland County Animal Control in Fayetteville, NC. A ban that will affect ALL Dobermans, Rottweilers, Chow Chows, German Shepherds, Great Danes, Pit Bulls, Mastiffs, Akitas, and Huskies.

I can understand why some people may see this as preventative to possible liability issues via future adoptions, however this is a death sentence for hundreds, if not thousands, of innocent lives. To discriminate against an innocent animal based solely on his/her breed is immoral. A dog's breed does not determine whether he/she will be a liability. It depends on the environment with which it was raised and the nature of the individual dog. A Golden Retriever is just as likely to bite as a Rotti or Doberman, if they are raised in the same hostile environment. If you want to prevent "vicious" dogs, start prosecuting the HUMANS that make them that way via dog-fighting, puppy-mills, ect. If you are concerned about liability, have adopting families sign a wavier. There are much better ways to protect your shelters than killing the innocent. A wavier is even more COST-efficient.

Please, instead of killing innocent canines, consider getting those same dogs the justice they so rightly deserve. For every dog considered "dangerous" there is a human behind that dog training him/her to be that way for their own twisted psychopathic gain. These dogs are innocent and are in desperate need of families who will show them love and compassion. There are grants and hundreds of rescues that work every day to show that given the chance these canines can be contributing members of this society.

This is a small list of available rescues from the breeds mentioned above, and I only had to Google to find them. This should tell you how passionate people are in the ability to place these good animals with great homes. They dedicate their lives to saving these dogs just like you dedicate your life to making these kind of decisions. Decisions that define you as a moral empathetic human-being.

Please, stand with me against this ban. Let's work together to find a way to save the lives of innocent dogs, who's only mistake was being born "the wrong breed."
