Mayor Karl Dean:

We are individuals inspired by the message of SlutWalk. We have united to shed the stereotypes and myths about sexual assault and foster a better understanding of why sexual violence happens, support victims and survivors, and put the blame and shame where it belongs--on those who perpetrate the crime.

We believe that the citizens of Nashville are a diverse and innovative people; therefore, there is no challenge too big for such a resilient and compassionate group. We resolve to make Nashville the first shame-free city on the planet! We will do this by engaging all our friends and neighbors and empowering victims and survivors. We will spread the word that victim blaming is unacceptable in Music City. Sexual assault happens and it is tragic. We must say to victims that it is ok to report and it is ok to speak out.

Just a few weeks ago the city of Nashville said to you in a vote, Mayor Dean, that we trust you. Voters said we trust you to run the city and all that entails. Sir, we want you, as Mayor, to say to victims that very same thing - WE TRUST YOU. We will listen to you. We will not judge you or make assumptions about you. There is no reason to be silent or afraid here.
