Mayor Greg Stanton: Make it easier to keep backyard chickens within the city limits

Chickens are the most sustainable pet on the planet. They are a fun pet that gives back to its keeper, by providing fresh, organic eggs. they encourage worm growth=increasing micronutrients=feed the top soil,and keep gardens clear of unwanted pests.

 I am raising my children to be good stewards of the Earth.
We are not allowed to keep chickens on our 12,000 sq ft property because the  current city code is too strict.

Stop giving neighbors control over our backyard hen keeping, and yard size restrictions.

8-7 Poultry and rodents.

(a) Except as otherwise provided in this article, it is hereby declared to be a nuisance and it shall be unlawful for any person to keep rodents or poultry within the City. No poultry or rodents shall be kept in an enclosure within eighty feet of any residence within the City. Poultry may be kept within eighty feet of a residence if written permission consenting to the keeping of poultry less than eighty feet from a residence is first obtained from each lawful occupant and each lawful owner of such residence. Poultry shall not be kept in the front yard area of any lot or parcel within the City. Poultry and rodents shall be kept in an enclosure so constructed as to prevent such poultry and rodents from wandering upon property belonging to others.

Why should a neighbor have control over you owning chickens when they can own 10 cats? Those cats can breed feral kittens. Those cats jump fences and leave fecal matter that is toxic to pregnant women in everyones gardens.

Dogs are noisy pets. Chickens softly cluck only when they are laying an egg. Chickens are fun, sustainable pets. They can lay up to 2 eggs a day, at times. They control cricket, roach and scorpion problems, without pesticides. They 'give back' to any garden, adding to top soil, where as dogs fecal matter is a problem as well.

Eggs that come from backyards are fresher and healthier, tasting much better. They will be eaten within days instead of shipped hundreds of miles. Big Box egg farms are at much higher risk of passing avian flu over small brooders..just think of a packed subway at rush hours, compared to Sunday afternoon. Your chances of catching a virus in a packed farm are higher-all the more reason those farmers feed their birds antibiotics 'just in-case'! A backyard chicken keeper is at very low risk for having bird flu problems, and Not heard of. Backyard chickens don't have to be fed low-quality food with antibiotics to keep profit high. They see (and feel) plenty of UV rays, producing stronger egg shells.

In case you didn't know, hens lay eggs Whether a rooster is present, or Not. A rooster is the keeper of his hens (protector) His presence also makes the chances of the eggs being fertile very possible. Most do not keep a rooster, unless they live on acres of land.
