Sometimes neighbors have problems and feuds occur but I’m sure none could ever imagine this happening to them. It is an owner’s worst nightmare.

Perquimans County, North Carolina, Dec. 10, 2011- a feud between neighbors turned deadly- the victim- an innocent one-year-old Labrador retriever named Duke.

The Hamptonroads.com reported a case of felony animal abuse when Perquimans County resident Terry Jackson shot his neighbor's dog. According to Perquimans County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Eric Tilley stated that Jackson admitted shooting the dog when he entered Jackson's yard early Saturday morning.

Duke’s owner, Miller, let his dog go out for a few minutes but within15 minutes, Duke was on his front porch bleeding profusely. As Miller rushed his dog to the vet, his sons followed Duke's bloody trail to Jackson's property. The neighbors had had problems and arguments in the past.

An eyewitness said the dog named Duke, posed no threat to Jackson who frequently would leave food scraps out in his yard which attracted animals and in this case, Duke. According to the witness, when Jackson saw Duke, he went inside his home and came out with a shotgun and pulled the trigger at close range striking Duke in the face and head.

Duke was taken to the Greenbrier Veterinary Emergency Clinic in Chesapeake and died the following day Dec. 11, 2011.

Duke was a birthday present last year from his sons, and every night Duke would sleep near Millers bed.

It is so unfortunate that an innocent dog died over the problems with humans. Duke suffered the consequences for something that was not his fault.

A felony warrant has been issued for Jackson on felony animal abuse charges.
