How We Won

Oct 07, 2011

Over 500 Change.org members asked Lynn Featherston, UK Parlimentary Under-Secretary for Inequalities, to take the vow against early and forced marriage and make sure child marriage is on the UK and Commonwealth international development agenda. Featherstone has announced that she will publicly sign the vow before the next international development agenda meeting, and will encourage her colleagues to do the same.

Now, activists are asking UK Prime Minister David Cameron to take the vow to help ensure early and forced marriage is a top priority issue for the adminstration.

Every year, 10 million girls are being marrried off, many against their will, that's one girl every three seconds. If married young, girls are less likely to go to school, perpetuating the cycle of poverty and maternal mortality. Escaping child marriage and getting an education breaks the cycle of poverty and poor health.

Take the vow: http://www.plan-uk.org/what-we-do/campaigns/because-i-am-a-girl/vow/

By taking the vow to end early and forced marriage, you will be helping to mobilise far- reaching political support to eradicate the practice internationally.
