Biffa, a billion pound waste disposal company, is looking to build a huge 300,000 tonne capacity incinerator 2km from Loughborough University. This will bring HGVs packed full waste through Loughborough adding to the already high amounts of pollutants the incinerator will release into the region's air, prevailing winds will ensure Loughborough will get the worse of it.

Adding to this, such a facility will damage the region's environmental image and commitment to a sustainable future.

There are no statistics proving this region will not be able to avoid such drastic measures to handle its waste. It's worth noting that although Biffa considers this development an 'energery recovery facility', the energy provided from burning this waste is not substantial.

This petition calls for the University and Students Union to provide a united front with local communities against the decision to grant Biffa planning permission during the appeal process starting 8th November 2011.
