Legislation should not be lengthy and confusing.  Bills should be concise.  Bills should not have unrelated legislation tucked neatly within.  If lengthy 2000+ page bills are being produced, the public cannot stay informed; our esteemed members of the House & Senate cannot even read the material and internalize it before it is time to discuss and vote on the measure.

To solve this problem, a maximum word limit should be placed on new legislation.  The word length limit will lead to more productive, focused discussion.  Turnaround time for voting on these measures should drop, as there will be more voting and less time spent posturing.   The limit on length will remove hiding places for unrelated clauses.  The limit on length will lead to piecemeal legislation for large important issues that will help remove much of the complexity and circular arguments that are commonplace in modern US government.  Successfully implemented, it should result in greater transparency and insight into which issues are agreed upon by all parties vs. what issues are holding up the entire package.

Sign this petition if you agree that it is time for the US government to try a new political approach, by limiting the scope of new bills to have a 1000 word length limit.

Limit New Legislation to 1000 Words or Less

Cordial Greetings to House, Congress, Mr. President,

We all agree that US politics is broken, and it is time for a new political approach. Please change the way laws are made -- and hold new legislation a 1000 word length limit.

Sincerely,
Darin Gillis,
