The Town of Rosendale has the opportunity to purchase Joppenbergh Mountain and preserve it as open space for public use.
Because the Town currently leases the municipal parking lot from the current property's owners, the purchase would save the Town thousands of dollars each year. We also believe that access to the mountain would increase tourism, and even be used to connect a path from the village to the upcoming Rail Trail extension.
Preserving Joppenbergh Mountain makes sense for economic and environmental reasons.

I support the Town of Rosendale's purchase and preservation of Joppenbergh Mountain.
The Joppenbergh Mountain property is 117 acres of woods, meadows, and rocky ledges. Thanks to a $100,000 gift from the Open Space Institute, the Town of Rosendale can purchase this entire property for only $85,000, with the requirement that the land is preserved as natural space for public use.
The Town currently leases the municipal parking lot from the owners of Joppenbergh Mountain, and the cost of the lease is thousands of dollars per year more than the town collects in property taxes from the owners. Purchasing the property will save the town money immediately, and for years to come.
Access to the mountain would increase tourism, and build upon our reputation as a gorgeous town with interesting shops and lots cultural venues and events. It's possible the property would allow a path from the village to the upcoming Rail Trail extension, further increasing visitor access to the town.
I believe the Town should preserve this unique natural resource for people to enjoy.
