Did you know that a security fence along the Mexican border costs the U.S. government nearly $4 million per mile? And little has been done to review the effectiveness in preventing illegal crossings, or environmental impact of a border-spanning fence.

In reality, the current U.S. immigration system is broken, and a highly expensive fence is not the solution. Thankfully, President Obama promised during his campaign to reform immigration policy and "foster safe, legal and orderly migration." His plan includes new opportunities for undocumented migrants to legalize and focuses on prevention, discouraging businesses from violating immigration laws.

President Obama alone cannot fix the problem. Catholic Relief Services urges everyone to welcome our brothers and sisters with love and compassion, regardless of their place of birth. Urge Congress to make immigration reform a priority, since it's a necessary part of our economic recovery »
