Lake Nakuru National Park - home of the flamingos and both rare white and black rhino's. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Centre. Lake Nakuru is protected under the Ramsar Convention on wetlands. The lake was established as a National Park in 1961. The park was expanded over the years to 188 km2 to provide a perimeter buffer zone to protect the lake from encroachment by settlements and to minimise the impacts of urban and agricultural development in the immediate catchment. The park was declared a rhino sanctuary in 1983.The park has a large reserve of over 300 species of birds, which make it an ideal site of bird lovers. The park is visited by over 300,000 visitors per year bringing in over US$ 2.4 million (Sh216 million) per annum according to records from the Ministry of Tourism.

If a road is built through the park then surely that will be the death of this tiny but magnificent oasis of paradise and conservation.
