Last year in May, a 2-year-old pit bull, later named Phoenix, was doused with gasoline and set on fire. Reports indicate that spectators were actually laughing as the dog burned. The police Officer who used her sweatshirt to put out the fire said:

"This was one of the most cruel things I've ever seen. It hurt me to my heart. She was screaming, rolling around on the ground. I've never heard a dog make that sound."

Phoenix survived with burns on 98 % of her body. Her tongue, her eyes and pads were scorched off. Wrapped in bandages, she was getting treatment for her burns. Phoenix received help through a BARCS program called the Franky Fund that helps homeless and abused animals get the medical care they need. Despite her extraordinary pain and cruel treatment, the veterinary staff reported that she was wagging her tail and trying to walk toward her caregivers for comfort. Sadly, her body was under such tremendous stress from her injuries that her kidneys began to shut down and four days after the incident, the doctors had to euthanize her.

Two seventeen year old juveniles were arrested. The animal abuse case against them was scheduled for 30th June, but may have been postponed to 20th September, 2010.

This sample letter will automatically be sent to the Mayor's Office, the State's Attorney, and to members of the Baltimore City Council. Please demand justice for Phoenix, and ask them to take a firm stand against animal abuse !

Justice for Phoenix – Animal Abuse in Baltimore

Dear Sir/Madam,

Baltimore has had a series of serious juvenile animal abuse cases. The most prominent is that of the 2-year-old pit bull, Phoenix, who was viciously set on fire last May. It is time that Baltimore starts taking these acts of violence towards animals seriously. Research has shown that there is a strong connection between animal abuse and violence against humans. People who commit animal abuse continue to commit violent acts towards humans. The juveniles convicted in the case of Phoenix must be tried as adults. Their horrendous crime must be punished with the maximum penalty. The people demand justice for Phoenix. Furthermore, Baltimore needs to enforce legislation for a zero tolerance policy for animal abusers. Harsher animal abuse penalties must be implemented. The youth need to be educated on compassion towards animals, in order to prevent new cases of violence from arising.

Baltimore needs to send out a message that animal abuse will not be tolerated.

Thank you.
