JUSTICE FOR BILLY BOY

SUBJECT:  Ban neck-crushing conibear and steel leghold traps and snares.

Dear Members of the Kentucky Legislature,

On December 11, 2011, my beloved Billy Boy was savagely killed by a Conibear trap.  Contrary to what trappers will tell you his death was not mercifully immediate.  It took my boy at least one and a half minutes to die.  Trappers call non-target animals they will not be able to sell to the fur business, "trash."  My dog was not "trash."  He was a member of my family.  89% of pet owners in this country describe their animals in the same way.

As Billy Boy writhed in his last moments of life I made a promise.  His loss would not be in vain and if I have to spend the rest of my life working toward a ban on these terrible instruments of death I am prepared to do so.  These traps are for one purpose and one purpose alone; to adorn the bodies of the rich who never have to witness the animal's terrible death.  How many of us can afford to purchase a floor-length fox coat?  Only the 1% and maybe a relatively few others.  According to a Yale University poll, 78% of Americans oppose trapping.

We are fortunate enough to live in a Republic.  We, the people, call upon you to represent the people's will in their opposition to these deathtraps.  These medieval instruments must be banned before they take the lives of any more innocents be they domestic animals or endangered species.  Traps do not discriminate.  They can kill your dog or break the leg of your child.  Stop this barbaric custom and pass legislation today banning traps in perpetuity.
