Ask Administrator Bolden to Stop the Use of Monkeys in Space Radiation Studies

Please take a minute to let NASA Administrator Charles Bolden Jr. know that you support efforts to stop the use of monkeys in space radiation studies. We have provided text for you, but if you decide to write your own message, please be polite and encouraging. Here are some talking points:

I support the mission of NASA.Space radiation studies involving the use of live animals, however, are cruel and pointless.Genetic and physiological differences between humans and monkeys make this type of research ineffectual.Monkeys are sentient beings who experience pain and suffering. The experiments are in direct violation of the NASA Principles for the Ethical Care and Use of Animals, also known as the Sundowner Report. There are many viable nonanimal research methods that can and should be used.

Please note: if you are not a resident of the U.S., leave the postal code field blank in order to submit your message.

The letter provided reads as follows:

"As a supporter of the mission of NASA, I am writing to ask that you immediately stop funding space radiation studies that involve the use of live monkeys. Genetic, physiological, and anatomical differences between humans and monkeys dramatically limit the conclusions that can be drawn from the planned studies. Ongoing, ethically-conducted studies already use nonanimal methods to determine the effects of radiation on humans. Radiation experiments involving nonhuman primates commonly involve restraint and other cruel procedures. Monkeys, like other primates, are highly intelligent, have strong family bonds, demonstrate empathy, and, most importantly, suffer. I urge you to halt these inhumane and pointless experiments."
