How We Won

Jan 27, 2012

Victory!  Months after Munther Fahmi started his petition on Change.org, the Israeli government has finally granted him residency.

Mr. Fahmi explains what happened:

Dear Friends,

The Government of Israel has accepted the Israeli Supreme Court recommendation that my residency be reinstated. I have been granted 2 years' residence on the basis of a Jerusalem Identity Card, and pending good behavior, shall receive permanent residence thereafter.

I am deeply indebted to all of you and extremely grateful for your kind support during this year of particular uncertainty. There is still much work to be done for resolution in line with international law for the 130,000+ Palestinians whose residency has been revoked by the Government of Israel.  With Best Wishes,

Munther Fahmi

My name is Munther Fahmi, and I am the founder and owner of the Bookshop at the American Colony Hotel in Jerusalem, a cornerstone of cultural life in Jerusalem and a small but vital space of free and independent thought and debate.

Now Israel is threatening me, a Palestinian who was born in this city, with imminent deportation!

I am a bookseller, and I have done absolutely nothing to deserve this.

Please support my right to continue to live and work in Jerusalem, the city of my birth, by signing this petition calling on Israeli authorities not to deport me.

Thank you!

I write to express my dismay at Israeli plans to deport Munther Fahmi, founder and owner of the Bookshop at the American Colony Hotel in Jerusalem.

Munther's bookshop is a cornerstone of cultural life in Jerusalem and a small but vital space of free and independent thought and debate.

More importantly, Munther was born and raised in Jerusalem. It is simply unethical to deport someone from the land where they were born and raised.

I support the right of Munther Fahmi to continue to live and work in Jerusalem, the city of his birth.

I call on you to confirm that Munther Fahmi will not be deported.

Please reply to responses@change.org

Thank you.
