Is providing your child with a decent education a crime? Tell Connecticut it isn't!

The Issue

"Connecticut authorities have filed theft charges against Tanya McDowell, a homeless woman, alleging that she used a false address to enroll her son in a higher-income school district, The Stamford Advocate reports. If she's convicted, McDowell may end up in jail for as many as 20 years and pay a $15,000 fine for the crime." Tell Connecticut to pursue real criminals and not Tanya McDowell who is facing conviction of up to 20 years a long with a $15,000 fine for simply wanting to provide her child with a better education. Since Ms. McDowell is homeless, it would have been very easy for her to neglect her son by failing to enroll him in school, but then should would have been accused of negligence, right? Is connecticut seeking justice by using Ms. McDowell as an example? Or is this justice? Ms. McDowell is being accused of "stealing"  $15,686 of tax payers dollars since that is the cost of  education  per child at the Brookside Elementary School.

"Tanya McDowell, 33, was charged with first-degree larceny because police estimate the education services she allegedly stole cost taxpayers a total of $15,686."

I am sure there are actual crimes that need pursuit where officials are not forced to use correlations or analogies to "find" a crime. For example, Ms. McDowell faces more time in prison than a Connecticut man who was accused of having a sexual relationship with a 13 year old girl, but who was convicted and sentenced to 18 months in prison. http://www.connecticutcriminaldefenseattorneyblog.com/2011/03/connecticut-man-gets-18-months-in-child-sex-case.shtml

I can think of several human rights violations when looking at this case, which directly correlate with several discriminatory practices. Lets not take a mother away from her son or waste more tax paying dollars by trying to make Ms. McDowell a criminal.
