Indian Government: Don't Censor Facebook!

The Indian government has asked Internet companies and social media sites like Facebook, to pre-screen user content from India. This is a direct attack on our Right to Freedom of Speech and Expression !

Thousands, including many celebrities and public figures, are already protesting against this move.

You might want to talk about how corruption has led to bad roads near your home and the Government now wants to pre-screen that before you post.

The Government is suggesting the leading Internet companies to pre-screen content for objectionable material where as such an attempt to monitor and control electronic information could easily amount to restriction of the Fundamental Right to Speech and Expression.

For three months, Minister Kapil Sibal led meetings behind closed doors. Now, on 15 December, he will meet with Internet company leaders to come up with guidelines to monitor content you post online.

India isn't the first country to threaten to censor the Internet this year, but so far it is the biggest threat to Internet freedom. If India goes through with its plans, other countries could soon follow. Soon governments will have the ability to block anything online. It's a huge threat to democracy and fre edom of speech.
