More and more these days, we are hearing about people imprisoned for years and years for crimes, which they did not commit. All too often, these convictions are the result of a rush to judgment, unethical practices, negligence and a need to win or be right at all costs, at every level, and within every department of the criminal justice system. Each case of a wrongful conviction must be investigated fully in an effort to see if the actions of the professionals involved constituted negligence, unethical actions, and/or willful wrongdoing. If it is determined that other adequately trained and experienced professionals would have made different decisions and judgments and come to different/correct conclusions, then those involved in the unethical or negligent behavior should be penalized somehow. Just saying, “we’re sorry,” after incarcerating someone for the better part of his or her life is woefully inadequate. If there were more consequences for such actions, professionals would take a much more discerning look at the facts, circumstances and evidence of each case.
Hold Law Enforcement Professionals Responsible for Unethical Actions and Wrongful Convictions
Dear Representative
All too often, we hear about people imprisoned for years and years for crimes, which they did not commit. More often than not, these convictions are the result of a rush to judgment, unethical practices, negligence, and a need to win or be right at all costs, at every level, and within every department of the criminal justice system. I demand that the laws be implemented to incorporate some remedies and punishments for these injustices. Each case of a wrongful conviction must be investigated fully in an effort to see if the actions of the professionals involved constituted negligence, unethical actions, and/or willful wrongdoing. Then, if it is determined that other adequately trained and experienced professionals would have made different decisions and judgments and come to different/correct conclusions, then those involved in the unethical or negligent behavior should be penalized somehow. Just saying, “we’re sorry,” and sometimes awarding civil judgments, after incarcerating someone for the better part of his or her life is woefully inadequate and unjust. Attaching more consequences to such actions by legal professionals would surely make all professionals take much more discerning looks at the facts, circumstances and evidence of every case they become involved in.

While it is commendable that some in the legal profession have taken it upon themselves to fight the good fight and to fight for the wrongfully convicted, more must be done to prevent these travesties of justice from ever occurring in the first place. Now, I leave it to the minds of professionals in the field to come up with the jargon, the corrective actions and laws with which to implement this action. More importantly, I hope that this petition will find its way to the hearts and minds of the people, and then to those with the power and the will to act on it. It is all about creating a better society and an even greater America. So, I thank you, in advance, for your time, consideration and action with regard to this petition.
