S.Con.Res.71 is a bipartisan resolution that highlights the need for the U.S. government to “prevent and mitigate acts of genocide and other mass atrocities against civilians.”

S.Con.Res.71 identifies steps the U.S. government should take to prevent genocide and mass atrocities, making “never again” a reality instead of just a promise. Among its provisions, the resolution:

-  Affirms that it is in the U.S. national interest to work with international partners to “prevent and mitigate future genocides and mass atrocities”

-  Calls on the President, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of the Treasury, the head of USAID, and the Director of National Intelligence to form a “whole-of-government approach” to preventing genocide.

The Auschwitz Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (AIPR) supports S.Con.Res.71. In September 2010, AIPR ran the first-ever genocide prevention course for the U.S. military, educating officers from the Fort Leavenworth Army Command and General Staff College on military options for preventing mass atrocities. This program is part of the AIPR mission to build a worldwide network of military, civilian, and academic leaders with the tools and the commitment to prevent genocide.

Please cosponsor S.Con.Res.71 to prevent genocide

Dear Senator,

I urge you to cosponsor S.Con.Res.71. As a supporter of the Auschwitz Institute for Peace and Reconciliation, which in September 2010 ran the first-ever genocide prevention training for the U.S. military, I support the proposals contained in S.Con.Res.71. They are a positive step towards institutionalizing genocide prevention as called for in the 2008 Genocide Prevention Task Force Report, and as supported by the programs of the Auschwitz Institute.

It is time for the U.S. government to do its part to prevent genocide.

Sincerely,

[Your name]
