The sub-Saharan region of Africa is the worst affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. In the world, nine out of ten children living with HIV call sub-Saharan Africa home. Approximately three million children are themselves infected with HIV, about 90 percent of whom contracted the virus from their mother during pregnancy, delivery or breastfeeding. And each number represents a personal story of struggle.



But not every child's story ends in tragedy. Children who take anti-retroviral medication are able to live long, productive lives. Unfortunately, free medicine is only available to a small percentage of children with HIV/AIDS. And a shockingly low percentage of children in Africa who require anti-retroviral treatments are able to receive these life-saving medications.

That is why the American Foundation for Children with AIDS provides a family model of care - where treatment and medical services are provided not only to HIV+ children, but to their HIV+ caregivers and to HIV+ pregnant women as well. By taking preventative measures to protect unborn children from infection - and caring for infected children and their support systems - American Foundation for Children with AIDS gives children a chance to live full and meaningful lives.
