There have been two major recent cases of sexual/physical abuse of senior citizens at nursing homes.

The Associated Press reported that a man was sentenced to 12 ½ years in prison for sexually abusing residents of Ohio nursing homes.  I was not only disgusted by the idea, but also the fact that the offender, John Riems, who claims his innocence, was videotaped committing these crimes.

Standards.net reported that two teenage girls who worked at a nursing home in Minnesota have been charged with abuse, accused of taunting, spitting on and groping the breasts and genitals of residents who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia disorders.

According to the criminal complaint, the teens laughed earlier in 2008 as they spat in residents’ mouths, poked and grabbed them, and at times mocked them until they screamed.

Offenders of sexual/ physical assault and abuse target those who are not capable of making decisions for themselves. Senior citizens, and children, look to adults for protection and help with everyday living. If the adults who are supposed to be supplying this assistance betray their trust, what are they to do? Who can they turn to? If the victim considers the possibilities of seeking outside assistance, they may decide against it, feeling that their ultimate help comes from their immediate supporters.

We can help by mentoring, adopting, visiting, assisting senior citizens in nursing homes. In addition, please report abuse or any suspicious activity.
