Diego the lion was still a cub when he was seized by Mexican authorities from a person who kept him as a pet. The cub was "temporarily" placed at a tiny cage in Zoo named "Zacango". Animal defense activists immediately helped Mexican authorities in order to contact Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado, the widest sanctuary for large carnivores in the whole continent, for them to admit Diego there. They did, and everything was set up for Diego's transfer from Zacango to Colorado, but somehow the authorities changed their minds and stopped paying attention to the case. Without legal permissions, Diego, an animal born to be free and to run great grass extentions under the sun everyday, had to simply stay locked inside a cold, lonely and small cage.
Animal defense activists started an online campaign to put some pressure over the authorities shoulders and obtain the permissions. You can see the campaign at http://freediegofree.tumblr.com... but one agent of PROFEPA (Mexico's EPA), Carmen Garcia (cgarciag@profepa.gob.mx) took the campaign as a personal offense and has been blocking any means the activists have to pursue Diego's freedom. Unfortunately, Carmen Garcia is the agent encharged of Diego's case. She told the activists that Diego was already donated to Zacango, but Zacango denies this fact. It seems like Carmen's target is to leave Diego there forever, as another zoo atracttion.
