Make Florida a Leader of the Clean Energy Economy

Florida has a chance to be a clean energy leader in the United States, and in the world. Supporting clean, secure, renewable sources of energy will create thousands of new jobs in the state of Florida, increase our national security, and create a robust, reliable new source of electricity at a time when the world’s energy future is increasingly uncertain.

For Florida jobs, for national security, and for our shared future, I urge you to do all you can during this legislative session to pass meaningful, substantive legislation to encourage substantial growth of the clean energy industry in the State of Florida.

The clean energy industry has been booming in recent years. The problem is, the boom has been overseas. Countries like China are investing billions into solar and wind power, and the United States risks being left behind.

Florida is positioned to lead the way in expanding the US clean energy sector. These good, reliable jobs are guaranteed to stay in Florida: when a solar panel gets put on a roof in Pensacola, or Naples, or Miami, it will be Floridians in those cities who are paid to do the work, and those local economies that will see the benefit.

Encouraging the use of renewable electricity sources provides not only economic security, but much-needed energy security as well. The challenge of finding secure sources of energy in the United States to power homes, businesses, and transportation is daunting, and will only get more so. As international sources of fuel become more expensive, increasing pressure will be put on domestic energy production. We need to be ready -- and by supporting a clean energy future right now, we can be.

Your leadership on this issue can provide vital economic and energy security to Florida, and to the nation. I urge you, before this legislative session comes to an end, to pass legislation that will guide us toward a clean energy future for the State of Florida.
