How We Won

Jan 27, 2012

From Petition Organizer Beth Enson: "Due to our Change.org petition, along with a vigorous public campaign by Taos Friends United in the local press, on radio, and in dialogue with public officials, Hutton Corporation has withdrawn its application to the Taos County Pkanning Department to build a Family Dollar store on the El Prado Meadow. Taos Friends United is now following the approval process of the revised Taos County Land Use Code very carefully, and is also sponsoring a candidates forum for the upcoming Taos Town Council elections, with the goal of securing permanent protection for the Meadow."

The planned El Prado, NM, Family Dollar Store would destroy one of the most spectacular views in our nation, of the majestic Taos Mountain seen across pristine pasture where Taos Pueblo’s buffalo herd grazes. This prime agricultural land, carefully cleared and stewarded by prior generations, should wisely be preserved for generations to come. The Taos County Land Use Code is being revised in February 2012 to preserve open spaces like the El Prado pasture. The attempt to push through approval of this site for a Family Dollar Store seems designed to subvert Taos County's democratic planning process, which involved hundreds of citizens over many years.

The site borders Taos Pueblo, and its driveway would be the Pueblo’s road to the Powwow grounds. Choosing this location for a Family Dollar Store is particularly insensitive.

The vista is a key tourist attraction, where visitors frequently stop to take photographs. The economic costs of its destruction far outweigh any economic benefits. Many other more suitable locations exist in the nearby vicinity.

Family Dollar Stores: Don't Pave Paradise!

Greetings,

Family Dollar Stores: Don't Pave Paradise!

The Taos County Land Use Code is being revised in February 2012 to preserve open space, including the El Prado pasture.

Family Dollar Store’s contention that this project would create jobs is belied by their recent admission that they would then close their existing store in the Town of Taos. The vista is a key tourist attraction, where visitors frequently stop to take photographs. The economic costs of its destruction far outweigh any economic benefits. Many other more suitable locations exist in the vicinity.
