Help create transparency in corporate campaign financing
The Issue
We here lots of rhetoric flying around in politics, sometimes we find ourselves wondering why certain topics are being so stressed by politicians when public opinion is totally against what they are saying. Our political system is saturated with money and lobbyist. These people are paid employees of big corporations to influence our political system. Most of the time these people defend big business, and leave our planet and people sick, overturn unions and privatizing positive public systems and turning them into for profit industries. They have the funds to put pressure on politicians that we do not have the luxury of. This often leaves us left out of the political decisions and we are not represented in legislation. Also, corporations give direct funding to the politicians through super PACs. These are non-transparent, “organizations” that represent the politicians in forms of advertisement and attacks onto their competition. After this funding the politicians defend and protect the ones who helped them the most in their election. There was a very critical Supreme Court case the affected this system back in 2010 and the American people lost a huge battle, called citizens united vs. the federal electoral commission. The case ended saying that Corporations are represented as legitimate people and are allowed to use unlimited money in funding political figures. This is a disgusting attack on our democracy and takes the power away from us. We are fighting to overturn this court case by pushing for an amendment the constitution and also forcing corporations to go through red tape to prevent them from so easily providing funds and corrupting our political system. By signing this petition you are advocating for the Share Holders Protection Act, an act that has been shelved by our legislative branch already, but this act would force corporations to hold elections amongst their shareholders. Protecting the shareholders from lobbying for causes they do not support and have a say on where their money is going.
