Strays are a “problem” in Egypt. Animal welfare organizations want to help by spaying the dogs and cats on the streets but the Egyptian government kills them instead.

The Government in Egypt still insists on using strychnine poison to address stray dogs problems in Egypt.

Strychnine, the poison reportedly being given to the dogs/cats, causes severe pain and discomfort before death. Dogs fed poisoned meat suffer increased reflex excitability in the spinal cord, causing all their muscles to contract simultaneously. Animals can suffer and convulse for hours before finally dying from suffocation after ingesting strychnine.
Whilst the Utility police force insist on shooting dogs regardless of the plea from Animal welfare groups and organizations in Egypt.

A shocking number of dogs, cats, and others are born daily into a world whose homes and hearts don’t have room for them. For every one companion animal who lives inside with a human family and receives the attention (toys, love, companionship, etc.) health care, and emotional support that he or she needs, there are many more who are just barely surviving.

Thousands of cats/dogs never know a kind human hand. They live hard lives on the street before dying equally hard, agonizing deaths.

Spaying and neutering helps stem the tide of overpopulation. The real answer to the massive street animal population is to adopt a sterilisation programme.

A ‘NO KILL’ policy. It must be a national priority to reduce the number of stray animals over time.
Only through the continued nationwide establishment of such programs Egypt will bring an end to the tragedy of pet overpopulation.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and thank you for your support, which is highly appreciated. Send this message to the following Egyptian officials and urge and encourage them to develop and implement a humane method of animal control.

END TO THE POISONING AND KILLING

Dear sir/madame

Dear sir/madam,
The brutal treatment of stray animals in Egypt is fast coming to the attention of the world. We are horrified to learn , via graphic photographic evidence, about the lack of compassion and indiscriminate cruelty regarding the treatment of Egyptian animals.
We the undersigned are shocked about the way Egypt is treating stray dogs and cats. These poor creatures are poisoned even by vets who should help them, not kill them. But this does not solve the problem. The vast majority of Egyptian people are horrified at this mass slaughter of dogs/cats, they believe that a sterilisation programme is an effective method for controlling the number of street animals.
We respectfully and urgently request that you take action and put a stop to the brutal, vicious killing of street animals. Please work with animal welfare organizations who are adept at planning and implementing humane welfare programs.
Sincerely.
