After billions of dollars of US aid and years of encouraging Musharraf's undemocratic policies, we are accomplices to the current crisis in Pakistan. We've been here before - offering unquestioning support and resources to a totalitarian leader in the Muslim world in the hopes he will help us fight extremism. It didn't work in Iran and it won't work in Pakistan. Democracy and human rights cannot become collateral damage in the war on terrorism.

Ask Congress and President Bush to help pull Pakistan back from the brink. We must pressure Musharraf to release the peaceful demonstrators, political activists, opposition leaders, and judiciary officials. Freedom of movement and the right to assemble must be restored. Communication lines and independent media must be reactivated. And genuine democratic reforms with free elections must take place in the coming months.

Musharraf's weapons, money, and international legitimacy all come from the United States. We have a responsibility to the people of Pakistan to fight for their rights as aggressively as we fight for our own. There is still time for moderate leaders like Bhutto and Musharraf to form a united front against the Islamic extremists. But we cannot fight totalitarianism with totalitarianism. Email our leaders to end the crackdown now.

Tell Musharraf to End the Crackdown
