Change.org readers recently voted to crown Nashville, Tennessee the NIMBY capital of the United States. NIMBY meaning "not in my backyard," since many local residents refuse to share space with the homeless or formerly homeless.
Since Nashville experienced the worst flood in its history back in May 2010, residents have been putting up literal and figurative roadblocks for homeless citizens who hope to rebuild the tent cities wiped out by the floodwaters. No one begrudged homeowners trying to rebuild. When it came to the homeless population, however, some saw the flood not as a tragedy, but as an opportunity to finally shut down pesky homeless encampments.
Nashville Mayor Karl Dean has previously pledged to cut poverty. Send him a message today asking him to also do right by tent city flood victims and to encourage tolerance in his town.

As you know, Nashville experienced the worst flood in its history back in May 2010, residents have been putting up literal and figurative roadblocks for homeless citizens who hope to rebuild the tent cities wiped out by the floodwaters. No one begrudged homeowners trying to rebuild, but when it came to the homeless population some saw the flood not as a tragedy, but as an opportunity to finally shut down pesky homeless encampments.
I know you have previously pledged to cut poverty. I'm writing today to ask you to also do right by tent city flood victims and to encourage tolerance in your town.
