This is a petition to ban the use of fyke nets in Maine. Fyke nets are the nets that fishermen use to capture elvers, small glass eels that have rose to $2,200/lb. With this price the elvers are being over fished. This large amount of fishing is due to the fyke net, which remains in the water day and night catching a very large amount of elvers.
This is a dangerous thing because a the beginning of the month of May 2012 a report was sent out to announce that the elvers were at a historical low. Banning fyke nets will get more elvers a chance to get through and grow to be able to keep the glass eel population up.
