Large power plants, industrial boilers, and oil refineries release a lot of global warming emissions. On January 2, 2011, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will begin requiring these facilities to obtain permits for these emissions. In November, the EPA released guidance about the kinds of pollution control technologies and best practices state agencies should consider when issuing these permits.

The good news is that most states already intend to comply with the EPA’s recommendations because they are practical and affordable measures—such as implementing energy efficiency improvements that can cut fuel use and save money.

Unfortunately, the coal and oil industries are already attacking the EPA’s guidance. If successful, they could lock us into more polluting facilities for years to come. Please urge your governor to ensure that your state complies with the EPA’s technology guidance in a way that helps put us on the path to real global warming emissions reductions.

Comply with the EPA's best available technology guidance

Greetings,

I am writing to urge you to protect the public's health and the environment by urging our state's pollution permitting agency to comply with or exceed the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) technology guidance when issuing permits to large stationary sources of global warming emissions.

Our state will soon be responsible for issuing global warming emissions permits to some of the largest power plants, industrial boilers, and oil refineries. Implementing and exceeding the EPA's technology guidance will increase energy efficiency and lead to lower fuel costs for power plants.

Contrary to the doomsday predictions of the coal and oil industries, past experience shows that regulations reducing pollution are entirely consistent with robust economic growth and employment and provide significant public health and environmental benefits. This guidance will not affect the reliability of our electricity system, since compliance will be cost-effective for most plants.

We must take critical first steps to protect public health and the environment by addressing climate change. Please help put us on the path to real global warming emissions reductions by ensuring that polluting facilities comply with or exceed the EPA guidance.
