On December 30th 2009, a German Shepherd Heeler mix, named 'Buddy' was dragged to his death at the Colorado National Monument.
Steven Clay Romero, 37, of Grand Junction. was arrested for the death of this dog. He was indicted on one count of intentional animal cruelty.
Romero and his sister, Melissa Lockhart, stole Buddy the day before from the back of a truck belonging to Joe and Sacha Leber in Delta. The following day Romero took the dog to the Colorado National Monument, where video surveillance showed a pickup truck driving in with Buddy in the bed of the truck, and leaving without the dog.
The head of maintenance at the monument found Buddy with the rope around his neck about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday on a road in the monument, where he had been dragged for three miles.
The trial continues and sentencing will go before the Denver Court on July 30th 2010. Ask the U.S Assistant Attorney and Judge in this case to sentence Romero to the full extent of the law.

Give Buddy the Dog Justice
Dear U.S Assistant Attorney and Judge Brimmer,
I'm writing regarding the shocking case of Buddy the dog who was cruelly dragged to his death by Mr Steven Clay Romero behind his truck on the December 30, 2009.
I respectfully ask that you do whatever you can, within your power, to make sure that this person not only does not go unpunished, but that the maximum penalty of the law be enforced in this crime.
Years ago, in Texas there was a case where three Ku Klux Klan members tied a black man, James Byrd, Jr., to the back of their pick-up, and dragged him for several miles, until his body fell apart .... the perpetrators of this heinous crime received the death penalty, as well as life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Buddy, a defenseless dog, met the same horrible fate as James Byrd, Jr. Although humans and dogs are very different in the eyes of the law, I urge you to treat this case of cruelty with the same level of severity when sentencing Mr. Romero. Studies have shown that there is a strong correlation between cruelty to animals and other violent crimes. It may have been a dog behind Mr. Romero's truck this time, but next time, his acts of barbarity could be aimed at a person.
We can no longer stand by and watch animal cruelty not taken seriously. Animals are vulnerable in our society, they have no voice, are defenseless, innocent and need the most protection, and the way people treat animals is a good indication of how they treat their fellow human beings. The social media world is watching this case and we are relying on you to make a stand against animal cruelty.
Thank you for your time and consideration in this case.
Sincerely,
[Your name]
